General Motors Corporation is placed second amongst the automakers listed in the global unit sales in 2008 after Toyota. It was founded by William C. Durant on 27th September 1908 and it acquired the Oldsmobile in the same year.

In the following year, William took over the Reliance Motor Truck Company and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in U.S.A. GM’s global headquarter is located in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Currently, Kent Kresa is the Chairman of the company. Fritz Henderson happens to be the CEO, Robert Lutz the Vice Chairman, and Ray Young the CFO of the Company, while Eckhard Pfeiffer, Kathryn Marinello, Philip Laskawy, Karen Katen, Mark Guildenstern, George Fisher, Erroll Davis, Armando Codina, John Bryan, Erskine Bowles, and Percy Barnevik are other members of board of Directors.

The company has many manufacturing companies for trucks and cars across 34 countries. It employs more than 2, 50,000 people around the world and sells and services cars, trucks and SUVs in more than 140 countries worldwide. The brands Wuling, Saturn, Opel, Hummer, Saab, Vauxhall, Pontiac, Holden, GM Daewoo, GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick are among the cars and trucks sold worldwide in 2008. This reaches more than 18.35 million cars and trucks. Even with other automakers of the world, GM a whole world of collaboration which includes the collaboration with the Fiat and Ford Motor Companies. It has also vehicle manufacturing ventures with Toyota, Suzuki and some other automotive companies.

“Impact” was the concept car introduced by the General Motors Corporation in 1990 in the Auto Show at Los Angeles, which was the first zero emission car in the U.S. market. In China, GM is the best seller among the foreign automakers. In 2004, Cadillac imported from the U.S. and started sells. In the following year the Chevrolet brand hit the market with great popularity in China. Currently the company produces almost all the products for China in the joint venture Shanghai GM, which was a joint venture between the General Motors and the SAIC, a Chinese company on 25th March 1997.

On 30th March 2009, Barack Obama, the President of U.S. provided a U.S. Government guarantee of the GM’s warranty liabilities. The company has always worked for the alternative fuel engine technology vehicles. In 2004, General Motors introduced the first hybrid car for the passenger. In the following year, GM introduced the Opel Astra diesel Hybrid concept vehicle and in 2006 year it introduced the Saturn Vue Green Line, which was the first passenger hybrid vehicle.
